Induction Week

Orientation Experience's

On my induction week I experienced many new things that I should expect a lot more of throughout the next three years the main two being my first lecture and my first practical lesson at South Hampton. Surprisingly neither were what I had expected but to my pleasant surprise both experiences were better than i had previously expected.

In my first practical lesson we were asked to make paper bag masks. This was an idea that had emerged from a project that our head of course had been part of. The idea of the task was to all start with a brown paper bag and basic materials such as coloured card, string, coloured pens and pencil's, staples, glue and glitter pens, to take these basic materials and create a paper bag mask that translates our 'in five years time' mood board on to our masks. We were told not to take it too serious and to be creative.

For the first approximately 20 minutes of this task I struggled to find the right materials to use. And then the real problem, how do I express all my ideas aspirations and dreams onto this paper bag, make it look good and make it wearable. I had clearly forgotten the last instruction of the task "don't take it too seriously". At this point, I realised that I had to start doing something or I would run out of time.

As I was struggling to get some of my more abstract aspirations into a face form, I moved to the hair instead. The big bright yellow and orange springs coming out of the top represent a few things. Firstly that I hope to live in a warm country, hence the warm colours. Secondly I would love to have a big bouncy personality that stands out. Thirdly, and finally it represents the appearance I aim for in five years, I would love to have large long bright platinum hair with plenty of volume. With time running out my face was basic but the perfect opportunity to represent the character i wish for in five years time. with a wink and bright red lips I would like to be a bold and daring character that people acknowledge.

In all honesty, I do not really like the outcome of my work because I think I came up with the concept a little to late and then I had to rush to produce an outcome. I much prefer the idea of it more than the execution.

The next part of the practical was to go and photograph ourselves in our masks once more but this time in public. Bell and I chose to take ours on a bench outside university, We chose the spot because we liked the way it looked so casual when in real fact we stuck out like a saw thumb.

Illamasqua lecture:

It was a privilege that my first lecture at Southampton was a Illamasua lecture. Not only did we have the opportunity of learning about the products and their manufacturing and sourcing but we also learnt more of what the industry is really like and what to expect if we are lucky enough to become a part of it. The best part of the lecture for me had to be the demonstration done by part of the illamasqua team on one of my peers from my course.

During the demonstration we learnt tricks of the trade, such as Pritt sticking the eye brows to prep them for make up. I enjoyed, that whilst the demonstration was going on, the lecturer explained why these tricks may work better than what we may have been doing for different jobs and different clients. We also learnt where the techniques we were watching came from and how they change over time.

The demonstration of foundation application.

The product list for the make-up done in the demonstration was all amazing and it was very beneficial to see how to use them to create such a inspired look. She began with the eyes  she explained that the reason for this was so that you didn't have fall out on your full face of makeup and have to replenish foundation on top. This was insightful as usually i leave the eyes till last. When it came o the foundations it was specifically helpful to using Ilimasqua products, I learnt that for pink complexion to use number six as a base and to then put the desired skin tone on top of this and then you will have a more even complexion. All the foundations have a olive yellow undertone. Overall it was a constructive lecture and I''m excited for the rest of the course.

The final look of the demonstration.
unfortunately this photo  came out blurred.
I will source a better quality photo and replace this one.
